Tamales

The first tamales I ever had were from a jar.

Hormel makes these jarred tamales that are like... extruded tubes wrapped in paper instead of corn husks and packed tightly in a grease-flecked red fluid.

I fucking loved them.

They come in a can now and the last time I had them was a decade or more ago and they weren't the same but they still hit that one special craving for nostalgia food.

Today my husband got tamales from a guy on the corner, some red and some green, and damn if the red ones don't taste just like I remember the Hormel tamales tasting.

Wild.

Especially since the Hormel ones are beef and these are chicken.

The sauce is just... it's exactly how I remember it tasting.

I stopped doing my habit tracker because it really wasn't working to inspire me anymore and just depressing me. I'd like to go back to my old list system but it's not caught on yet.

TV:

What we do in the shadows S6 episodes 5-11, complete! )

A VERY SILLY SHOW! I'm glad we watched it!

Games: I opened up Cozy Grove again and got immediately so overwhelmed :D but there's spring events going on and it's still very cute, just too much right now for me. Still playing Meow Tower, lol.

Music: New to me, but not new in general: MisterWives. They have a fbr connection so I was surprised I hadn't heard of them :P They came up randomly in a tidal autoplay situation. The album is Nosebleeds & it's great. Also listening to Sobel's new record. But mostly I have still been hardly listening to music.

Books:

Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell. It's so crazy how family, who should know you best (and in some ways do, sure, due to shared experiences) sometimes just continue to operate using the idea they had of who you when you were six years old and then just never ever ever update that idea. An enjoyable read! This is the most neurodivergent family ever, lol. But it was the 60s-70s and no one was even talking about dyslexia.

In the middle of 2 meh non-fiction books, but maybe they'll pick up.

Writing and other wips: nothing!! I took a week off, and from language stuff, too. It was been chaos here and now I am going to be lonely as hell and bored, so maybe I'll post more lolol IT COULD HAPPEN!

Elderwood

Palia's big Elderwood update drops today/tomorrow/this evening/within a few hours.

Now, I've been looking forward to this update a lot, but so has every other player. Even if I pounce on the update and download it as soon as it's available, I don't think I'll be able to play much tonight. Or at all. So I'm putting my hopes in tomorrow, in case the first 12 or so hours are enough to take the strain off the servers.

Conversely, it's possible that I won't manage to actually log into the game before the weekend.

Edit: Oh, and if anyone wants to try out a free-to-play cozy MMO, I have a referral link.

What I am writing: a 5 book gay regency romantasy series. Regency romance! With fantasy and elves and Sidhe courts alongside the Regency ballrooms and manners. These will be original books which will start releasing this year, and for obvious reasons I can't post them here while writing them.

BUT! Right now I'm finding slavishly writing from point A to point B is making my brain whine and random prompts for scenes that will almost certainly not end up in the books are fun and keep me rolling. Anyone want to read ridiculous boys falling in love? PROMPT ME! Pretty please? I'm collecting prompts to do in my spare time, short little things I can jot off at work during breaks. The usual noun/adjective/verb in assorted combos, leaning towards things that would make sense in a regency era fic, would be very appreciated. ^_^ Throw as many prompts my way as you feel like, I'll use them to keep the momentum going.

First prompt was 'Silk and Scandal' )

Thanks for checking this out! Feel free to play around with these ideas or just go with your own, as long as the DNWs are kept to.

A Saturday Something

May. 10th, 2025 09:52 pm[personal profile] glinda
glinda: wooden needles in two bright red/pink balls of wool (knitting)
Mostly today I've been slowly (there's like 120 stitches) casting on a cowl and setting up the pattern repeat. I mean, I took myself off to Nairn for the day and walked along the beach and had a wee picnic, and the was unexpectedly a street festival with craft and food stalls. I also read a decent chunk of my book and got some writing done once I was home so all in all a sucess of a Saturday.

However, my main reason for making this post is that I think I might have accidentally become a shawl person. To explain: over lockdown I did a shawl shaping course, and made a bunch of mini shawls, and then a couple of years ago I made full sized versions of my two favourite shapes from the course as a stash busting project. I really enjoyed it, enough so that I even got myself blocking boards, but I haven't actually made any more, because I've never been able to convince myself that I'm a shawl person. I love the idea of them, I think they look great on other people, but I don't like them on me. Fast forward today, the weather is gorgeous and I'm planning to be outside doing things while wearing a bag and I need something to protect my shoulders as whenever I wear the dress I'm planning to wear today with a bag, no matter how often I reapply sunscreen I get burned. None of my cardigans really go with it - I was in fact contemplating making a cardigan to go with it my next project, but that doesn't resolve the problem today and by this point I need to leave the house imminently and don't have time to change - but then I remember my shawls. I manage to macguyver a solution with one of the shawls - a 3/4 shawl? - if I tuck the ends into the belt of my dress it stays put, problem solved.

So far so ordinary. But here's the thing. I have never in my life received so many compliments in one afternoon from people I don't know, on any knitted item I've made. Several different women stopped me - in shops, in a cafe, on the train - to admire my shawl and ask if I made it myself. All at times when I wasn't knitting myself. So not only was it a practical success - my shoulders are pleasingly free of either sunburn on marks where my bag rubbed - but I feel disproportionately good about both my shawl and myself! I guess I need to figure out how to wear them when I don't have a small rucksack pinning them in place? Shawl pins are a thing right? I've definitely got a scarf ring that was my gran's.

I've had new followers find their way onto DW since the last time I did this, so...if you want to be on the filter for my locked posts, drop a comment here and say so! (If you can see this post, you're already on it.)

It's nothing hugely dramatic or sensitive. These days it's mostly "family stuff I did recently" with a side of "grumbling about AO3." Most exciting it ever got was probably "the saga of how my housemate had a terrible time taking care of a new cat."

(Not this cat. This is just a general cuddly photo to thank you for reading.)

Nothing to report this week! What have I even been doing? Not watching any TV/movies, anyway. I'm in the middle of two books (one great, one meh) but nothing finished to report on. Only a couple hundred words written, deep in a All My Wips are Dead to Me place. Slow language week, too. I have been reading fic???? 150k in the last week which is a sharp turn from normal :D

Some cutie mourning doves for our wedding anniversary yesterday <3

Updated to add: I did get free of Stardew Valley this week, though! Playing more meow towers to make up for it, but in the end I had to leave my switch out without charging it until the battery died /o\ but I'm free now! It's too much of hassle to play! \o/ (......meanwhile Fantasy Life stalking me from the shadows with a supposed May release date....)

Dang, updating AGAIN to say, I did read a book this last week! I finished Crooked Kingdom, lolol. I liked it and it ended fairly well! Pretty fun magical universe and very fanficcy in style (complementary). <3 Inej <3
